I saw a really cute Christmas tree
skirt on Pinterest and I thought it was so cute...I had to try it. The tutorial
said to use hot glue to make the ruffles, but I decided to sew it so it would
last longer and so I could wash it.
I made the base of the skirt by cutting
out two identical squares and then folding them in quarters. I used a string
and disappearing marker to make a curve on the end of a fabric that I knew wouldn't really be seen for the inside and a curve
on the other end for the outside of the circle. Then I layed it out and cut a
line down the side. I faced the right sides together and sewed it
together.
Then, I cut out 2in strips of burlap
and red fabric. (My red is sparkly, so it's more festive.) I did a zigzag
stitch on one side of the burlap to keep it from fraying after you wash it and
I did a small hem on one side of the red. Starting on the outside/bottom of the
big circle I pinned the red to the fabric while I folded it every couple
inches, to create a ruffle. Then I sewed it. I then did the same thing by layering
the burlap- pinned then sewed it. I did this all the way to the top of the
skirt.
I decided I wanted to tie the skirt
together so I took my left over red fabric and made strips out of it to create
bows. My husband is working on the Christmas tree stand, so once that's done we
can cut down a tree and decorate it.
Here is the finished product. It will go on the bottom of our tree and I'm so proud of it! I haven't put the bows on yet for this picture, but what do you think? You can see the fabric in the middle of the skirt, but you won't see that part once it's on the tree.
